It’s that time. You set it aside JUST to do your creative work. And nothing. Nothing comes.
You feel uninspired. You wonder if the creative juice will ever run again. Maybe you sit there a while longer. Maybe you just get up and go do something else…
Yep. Been there. I think anyone who does any kind of creative work has been there.
Therefore, I have spent quite a bit of time experimenting and investigating my own blocks. Here are 10 tips that just might get you rolling again!
1.Create Your Creative Container. Creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens in a space both outside of you and within you that is cultivated. This blog will give you pointers on how to make an environment where creativity is almost inevitable.
2.Take Away the Preciousness. There is a reason why so many authors write books on scrap pieces of paper. When you create on something that isn’t precious, or with something that isn’t precious, or in a way that isn’t precious, you tell your brain that it is not the final product. And then your brain doesn’t put pressure on you to make it perfect! You also don’t have to wait until something is perfect to do it or share it! This blog post talks more about doing things imperfectly.
3.Keep It Where You Can See It. Don’t keep what you are working in a dark room where you never see it unless you go sit down by it. Keep it out in the open so that your creative mind can keep stewing on it even when you are doing other things. I discuss my trick for doing this along with other tips in this blog post.
4.Play With It! Lighten up! Don’t be so serious about your work all the time. Maybe even take a break and make something completely silly just for the fun of it. Doodles are my go-to to keep my creative mind nimble. Check out this blog post on what keeps us from playing and this one has my own story of playing around.
5.Investigate Your Rules. Yep you got rules around your writing. You got rules around your art. They might be helpful rules, but they might not. This blog post will help you to reflect on your rules.
6.Check Your Self-Talk. Are you being your own cheerleader or your own worst enemy? What we say to ourselves matters. It can definitely keep you from your own creative flow. Read this blog post to make sure you got your own back.
7.Get Inspired! Look, inspiration is food for our hungry creative minds! They must be fed! Go get you some food with this blog post.
8.It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense. We just love to be logical, don’t we? Well, creativity is often more chaotic than that. How do we break loose and trust the crazy ride of creation? Read here for more.
9.Leave Time for Transition. Many times we cannot just go from taking care of a million things in our lives to making something beautiful in a snap. Even if we really really want to. This blog post talks about creating time for transitions.
10.Trusting in Your Creations. Are you trying to churn one thing out after the other? Have you left some time for resting and celebrating in-between. This is a blog about trusting in what you have already created to lead you to your next creation.
There are so many ways to dive back into your creative flow. Trust that it is always there for you and you will find your way back, guaranteed. If you need some help in the process, let me know! We have fun workshops and coaching to get you on your way.
