“My challenge is being all over the place and trying to figure out what to focus on, instead of thinking about everything I need to do all at once.” This was the challenge identified by a coaching client this week.
Sound familiar? Of course it does! Who hasn’t had this challenge…
Every morning, I open my bullet journal, check my email, and look at my calendar. Every morning this challenge she described rushes over me to various degrees.
The list of what we need to do is long and never-ending. It always was and always will be.
So what to do?
I think the answer lies in finding the INSPIRED action.
Let’s take this moment as a possible example. I have a list of things I still need to accomplish today and it is already the end of the day. I am feeling quite overwhelmed by that and rather blah.
But, then, I get the inspiration to write a blog about following inspiration. So, I forget the list for a minute and, I begin typing this blog instead. Why? Because I am INSPIRED to write it!
I know, I know. It might not be the LOGICAL or PRACTICAL choice. It might not seem as important as those drawings I promised a client by the end of the day.
I sometimes allow thoughts like this to get in the way of my inspiration. Sometimes I don’t. And I rarely regret following my inspiration.
When I follow my inspiration and do something inspiring, I feel PUMPED, ENERGIZED, and ready to tackle the list. My creativity is flowing. I will probably do those drawings with more ease with more innovative ideas because I followed the inspiration into action.
Even if I cannot see a direct correlation between my inspiration and what needs to be done, it is STILL WORTH IT! FEELING BETTER always makes a difference. And maybe I will integrate something from the inspired action later.
Have you ever had one of those moments where you were like, “OH! THAT’S why I wanted to do that and I’m glad I did it because now it is coming together!”
And why is that? Because despite the false messaging prevalent in our society, life is NOT linear. Life is loopy and swirly and messy and colorful and unpredictable.
In this way, following inspiration is actually pretty practical. Pretty efficient. Pretty rad.
Inspiration has our backs. It wants to show each of us our unique path to living life in a way that feels good, abundant, flowing, creative, fulfilling. It wants to eliminate forcing and convincing and anxiety and shoulds and overwhelment and stagnancy and boredom and rat racing.
Over time, I am getting better at trusting inspiration to be my guide in my actions. In the next blog I will share some of the ways I practice this trust.
