As I thought about my friend who I have known since I was 5 years old, my friend who was attached to my hip for much of my youth and who has continued to be a part of my life ever since, I knew I wanted to give her a special gift for her birthday.
I had the idea to do an illustrated portrait of her, but I wanted it to be done in a way that would be meaningful to her.
We had a coffee date coming up. I decided it would be a great opportunity to ask her a few questions in order to get a better idea of how to do her illustrated portrait.
The first question was, “Are there any quotes or phrases or words that say something about who you are?”
This launched us into a deep discussion about the values she has been working with and how they are inspiring her to add and remove certain things in her life to align better with those values. Each value was a conversation in itself and was an opportunity for us both to continue to share our ever-evolving selves with each other.
Furthermore, we talked about symbols and objects of significance and colors that she prefers and why. These are not the typical topics of our conversation and I felt like I got to know her in some new ways. I love that I am still getting to know someone I have known for 38 years!
I took this information and went home to draw. As I did, I reflected on the beautiful time we had together. I realized that now this portrait would not only portray a story of who she is, but it would also serve as a reminder of our time together. My friend is also using it as visual inspiration to keep working towards the things that truly matter to her.
You can now order a Story of You Illustrated Portrait for someone you love. One option is to fill out the form and surprise them with the gift!
Another option is to use the questions to spark a conversation with them first, thereby also giving them the gift of a meaningful time together along with their portrait.
Either way, we are excited to provide this offering of a meaningful gift. You can give it to yourself or to someone you love. You can give it to them “just because” or to commemorate a milestone or celebrate a holiday. Click here to see examples and fill out the order form.
What story would you like to honor about your loved one?
